My Tamagotchi :-)

After reading about Carl’s Oregon Trail Sourdough on Making Light a few months ago, I put a dollar bill in an envelope and sent away for the starter. As to where one finds dollar bills in euroland, Forbes magazine regularly sends out readers surveys and includes a crisp dollar bill as “payment”, inviting you to give it to the charity of your choice. The fact that it is made of paper should fool no one: it’s practically worthless and should have been replaced by a coin years ago – but I digress.

The sourdough starter arrived by post on Friday – a plastic sachet containing about a bit more than a teaspoon of what looked like dried dough. I following the instructions to reconstitute. The following morning, the thing hadn’t moved at all, but by lunchtime there were a few encouraging bubbles. I fed it half a cup of flour and the same of warm water last night and this morning it was looking very vigorous. (Note, we are getting highs 32-33ºC in the shade these days, with lows of 15-17). So I’m like a schoolkid with a Tamagotchi – only I can make bread with mine.
