Too old for a subwoofer (and too young to die?)

I recently went shopping for a set of speakers to listen to music in the office, for when I get tired of wearing headphones. I tend to listen to music all the time. Most of what I like is relatively mild ( e.g. Nightnoise).

So, the shop had a wide range but they had a set by Koss (good brand) with an amplified subwoofer which looked good.

Got it back, plugged it in. Beautiful sound …. except, EVERYTHING had a huge bass sound. Even things that I would have sworn had no bass at all. I had to resort to turning the bass down on the iTunes equaliser, but that was not always satisfactory.

Thinking about it, maybe I should have looked a bit more closely at the box. That grinning youth – he’s got braces!!! Clearly, this product was not for my demographic. Can’t say they didn’t give me any hints. :-)

Those braces

So, today I picked up a set of JBL Duet speakers. No amplified subwoofer. Beautiful sound. And, I now have some extra floorspace under my desk.

Moral: there comes a time when a guy is just too old for a subwoofer.
