"Alone Together" - Brian Dunning & Louis Stewart

Catalog number: LRCD-5

Released: 1999

(sleeve notes from the album, by Gerald Davis)

This album was recorded just 20 years ago. It was some thing I had wanted to do for some time. Having heard Louis and Brian play together on several occasions, I knew that they were creating something that should be committed to tape for posterity. With this in mind we took a week at the Peacock Theatre where they played each day at lunchtime. Each concert was recorded. This enabled us to have the luxury of selecting the pieces from the week's playing that both musicians liked best and to put them together for an album. What we have then, is a programme, much as it would be heard "live" at the Peacock and represents the best of what both musicians were playing at time. Only the introduction to "Definitely Doctored", an improvised piece, was edited, all the other material is unaltered takes. The following year Louis and Brian represented Ireland at an Irish festival in the U.S. It was there that Brian first played with Míchaál O'Domhnaill, an encounter that; when Brian moved to Oregon, led to the setting up of the band, "Nightnoise". The group subsequently recorded several successful albums and toured regularly to capacity audiences in the U.S., Japan and Spain. Brian also recorded an album, Fair Play with his own band, Puck Fair for Windham Hill Records.

Louis Stewart, one of the world's finest jazz guitarists, was recently conferred with an honorary doctorate by Trinity College, Dublin, the first award of its kind to be given to a jazz musician His distinguished career includes work with many universally respected musicians, among them: Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Benny Goodman, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie and Stephane Grapelli. He has toured Brazil and made several recordings with George Shearing and has worked in Australia with the celebrated antipodean flautist, Don Burrowes. He frequently visits continental Europe to play, teach and record, but chooses to live in Ireland where he can be heard annually, with the world's best, at the Guinness Jazz Festival in Cork, in regular residential settings in Dublin's jazz clubs and in tours regularly around the country.
